Ashley Chorath is named Tomorrow25 Winner

Ashley Chorath is among the 25 juniors selected from students across the world for the Tomorrow25 award by Bentley University and TIME magazine.

 ashley

Ashley Chorath, a 16 year old 11th grader from Davie, FL, was recently selected among students around the globe for the 2010 Tomorrow25 award, a joint venture between Bentley University and TIME magazine which recognizes twenty-five outstanding high school juniors from around the world. This year marks the sixth anniversary of the international competition launched by Bentley in 2004 to identify the next generation of world leaders.

Ashley was chosen for her exemplary leadership and academics. She is the founder and President of her school’s Future Doctors of America club, President of the International Club, member of the Brain Bowl team, is a nationally published essayist and poet, and has served as a sectional editor of her school newspaper.

Ashley is the daughter of Cyril Chorath, a retired marine engineer, and Tessy Chorath, a pharmacist. She attends West Broward High School in Pembroke Pines, FL, where she has always been a top student and leader. She is ranked number one in her class at West Broward High School and consistently earns straight A’s in her rigorous course schedule.

In the future, this model student aspires to become a physician and journalist. Ashley cites her success as the result of a strong faith in God, the emphasis her parents have placed on education, and their support of her extracurricular pursuits.

The Tomorrow25 committee seeks outstanding young leaders who demonstrate leadership and accomplishment in a variety of ways, including academic excellence, initiative, citizenship, technological savvy, cultural awareness, social responsibility, and a commitment to making positive change in the world around them.

Chosen from hundreds of nominations from around the world, the 25 winners received national recognition and interacted with high-profile leaders on April 22, 2010 at the sixth annual Bentley Leadership Forum, in cooperation with TIME Magazine. The students were honored and applauded for all their accomplishments. Ashley will also appear in TIME magazine with the other students in a May issue. In addition to the Leadership Forum, Bentley hosted a welcome reception in honor of the Tomorrow25. The reception was a great opportunity for the Tomorrow25 students to meet one another, share common experiences and talk about future plans.

Bentley University is a leading school in business education. This year's theme for the leadership forum was "The Business of Healing Our World: Accountable Leadership in Action."  The forum featured leaders who are making a difference in healthcare, environmental change, brand and corporate responsibility, and leadership development. The keynote address during the morning program was delivered by Dr. Mehmet Oz, one of America's foremost cardiothoracic surgeons. A writer, inventor and advocate of alternative medicine, Dr. Oz also hosts his own popular syndicated talk show on Fox Television.

Ashley states, "It was an amazing experience and I met incredible students as well as leaders from around the world. Meeting Dr. Oz was very exciting and I really enjoyed my time at Bentley University."

  Greetings Samunder Club!

I hope you're doing well. My name is Ambar Mehta and I am Ravi Mehta's younger son. I am an undergraduate student at MIT and am contacting all of you for your help and generosity.

I am apart of a program called Camp Kesem. Camp Kesem is a college student-run summer camp for the children of cancer patients. It provides these children with a week long getaway to simply have fun and be kids, and also provides their parents some free time of their own. The MIT Camp Kesem will be hosting 60 children this coming August at Camp Merrowvista (in New Hampshire), allowing children from the ages of 6-16 to enjoy a fun-filled week and not worry about their sick parent's situation.

To provide this program completely free to its campers, we have to collectively raise over $50,000. I was wondering if you would like to make a donation towards our cause? We would truly appreciate it! Even a $5 or $10 donation will help.

If you would like to, you can click here to go to my personal donating site. Also, please feel free visit our website at campkesem.org/mit to learn more about the cause. You can also call me at (954) 319-7220 if you would like more information.

Thank you!
Ambar

SAMUNDER CLUB SPOTLIGHT - Captain Neville Dias

We're on the road, we're on the road to anywhere, With never a heartache, with never a care,

Got no home, got no friends,

Thankful, for anything the good Lord sends,

We're on the road, we’re on the road to anywhere, And every milestone seems to say,

That the road to anywhere, the road to anywhere,

Will lead to somewhere, someday.

The Story follows -

These words were repeated many times by Captain Neville Dias during his tenure as a cadet on board the T.S. “Rajendra,” not fully realizing the depth and power behind them. Truly, he says the shipping road he took as an 18 year old led him and his family to a country on the opposite side of the globe from India.

Born in Bombay, (he is still not used to saying Mumbai) in 1960, Neville Dias lived most of his childhood in Khar. Many teenage days spent at the beach, splashing around in salt water, led to the call of the sea, while still enrolled in his higher secondary education at Khalsa College. He joined the T.S. “Rajendra” in 1977 as a pre¬sea trainee cadet and in the following year was gainfully employed with Shipping Corporation of India, (monthly stipend of US$10!) After seven years with the same company Neville left to join Bergesen DY AS, a Norwegian shipping company based in Oslo. Simultaneously, he also completed a tenure with Horizon Ship Management. It is with these two companies that he learned the ropes of senior management and command responsibilities and was able to take over as a Master.

neville family photoPrior to joining Bergesen, Neville met the stunning Ramona who worked for Gulf Airways and was stationed in Bahrain.. After a year of air and sea miles under their belts, the two decided to tie the knot and settled in Pune. A few months later, Ramona took her maiden voyage and it wasn’t long before she had to fly home with a very important cargo! Rockford Fritz was born in November 1990 and unlike many shippie fathers, Neville was fortunate to be home. Since this was a successful recipe, Ramona joined Neville again on another ship and as their friends joke “it is a good thing that he decided to quit shipping. If not, they might have had a team by now.” Nielsen Joel, their second son was born in May 1993.

Missing the growing phases of his two handsome boys, Neville decided that it was time to beach his shipboard career. He was still passionate about shipping education and wanted to continue working in the maritime field. His efforts at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine led to a Master of Science degree in Maritime Management. He joined Carnival Cruise Lines in 1996 as an Assistant Manager, Safety and Environmental Protection where his first major task was to develop a Safety Management System for Carnival. Having successfully managed the internal and external audit program for a growing fleet of vessels Neville was promoted to Director, Quality Assurance in 1999. He is a qualified Lead Auditor for International Safety Management (ISM) Code, International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code, International Standards Organization 14001 and 9001 management system and has credentials as a Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA) with the Board of Environmental Certifications (BEAC).

On the social side, Neville is a Certified Advanced Soccer Coach for the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) and spent many years coaching soccer and Little league baseball in Miami Springs. His devotion to coaching kids, while spending quality time with his own sons led to the Miami Springs “All Star Soccer Team” winning the Under¬11 Dade County Championship, Regional Championships and a number of local and district tournaments. For these achievements, he was presented with a sealed Certificate of Recognition at City Hall from the Mayor of Miami Springs.

Currently, Neville is employed as a Director, Reporting and Analysis for Carnival Corporation and plc, a global cruise company that operates 87 cruise ships and is one of the largest vacation companies in the world. His current key responsibilities include developing Carnival Corp. and plc’s environmental performance metrics and carbon footprint reports.

Ramona works for First Choice Mortgage, when she is not participating in the many fund raising school activities of their sons. Rockford is now a senior and Nielsen is a sophomore at a challenging International Baccalaureate program in High School. Both are active members of their High School Band of Distinction, numerous school clubs and volunteer projects.
